As the requests for new innovation continually bombard the thermoplastic community, formers are always looking for ways to set themselves apart from the herd. Index took on the development challenge and started working with our fabric adhesion partner in late 2018. In 2019, we introduced the dual-layer Kydex®.

Heating Instructions for Two-Tone Kydex

When preparing and heating Two-Tone Kydex, for the molding process.  Guidelines must be followed to ensure production of a well-formed finish and product and to minimize waste.

Prep Instructions

  1. Cutting Two-Tone Kydex- preferred method -  bandsaw or scroll saw to create a clean cut.

Use of a straight razor on a box cutter can be used but scoring must be deeper than non-Two-Tone Kydex

  1. Two-Tone Kydex must be cleaned with a cleaning solution prior to heat application A simple non-abrasive cleaner such as Windex or Simple Green works well

Heating Instructions

Heating instruction varies depending on type of heater being used.

Type 1 Heater- Commercial Heat presses such as Geo Knight, Swing Man.

Must be pre-heated to 365’F. This is including the lower surface platen.  The press must be cycled 2 to 3 times for the 110 seconds cycle before placing any Two-Tone Kydex into the Heat Press. The plastic should be placed textured side down on the platen away from the heat source. Heat the plastic for 120-130 sec.  Times and results may vary depending on heater.

Type 2 Heater- Entry level heat press Instructions- such as obtained from Amazon.

Pre-heat to 375’F, recommended checking heat press with an external temperature gauge.

Forming Two-Tone Kydex-

All molds, forms and tools used in the forming process must also be pre-heated to prevent premature of the two tone Kydex cooling before forming.  The pre-heating includes forms in membrane and membrane-less vacuum formers.

Failure to do so may cause separation of the product or lack of definition in the final form.

Material can be separated manually when heated.  Doing so voids any manufacturing warranty and liability for product defects.
